Playing up the neck - D Shape Chords
In an previous post I talked about F shape chords, this time I’m going to show you D shape chords. The D shape chord is based on the D chord which is played between the second and fourth frets. To get started, place your index finger on the 3rd string - 2nd fret, next your middle finger is on the 2nd string - 3rd fret, little finger is on the 1st string - 4th fret and finally ring finger on the 4th string - 4th fret. With the D shape chord you generally don’t play the 5th string.

As with the F shape chord you can move this chord up the neck. Here are the common D shape chord positions with charts and audio playback. Try playing a song you know using all D shape chords, this is a good way to practice moving from chord to chord.
